Texting and Driving Emergency Dispute

http://www.okcfox.com/newsroom/top_stories/videos/kokh_vid_9701.shtml

In Oklahoma, steps are being taken towards making texting and driving one hundred percent illegal.  Some people, though, are trying to get there to be an exception to texting and driving.  They want it to be lawful for a person who is in an emergency status, like a police officer or a doctor, to be able to text while driving if they can prove that it is being done so in a necessary manner.
Others are arguing against this.  They feel that under no circumstances should it be lawful for someone to text and drive.  Their defense is that police officers and fire fighters are traditionally the ones on the road who are driving the fastest, therefore they are already more of a hazard to everyone on the road.  If you were to add texting in their, they become very harmful to the safety of everyone on the road.
How do you feel about people who are tending to emergencies being able to text while they are driving?  Do you think that because of their status, they become above the law?  I feel that it should not be legal for them to text because they can simply call the person who they need to reach.  Calling is a much more effective communication method than texting is first of all and it is much less distracting than texting as well.

  1. I think texting and driving should be illegal for everyone in every state. I know this is a strong opinion but really what good can come from texting and driving? Driving is already difficult enough, trust me I know as a teenager starting to drive, if you add texting to the equation driving safely becomes nearly impossible. I agree with you Will that people tending to emergencies should not be able to text and drive, they should simply call the person they are texting and that would reduce the time it would have taken them to text along with them more easily getting their point across.

  2. I agree with you will, I think that texting and driving should be 100% illegal while the vehicle is in motion. However, I feel like it should be legal if the vehicle is at a stop, like at a red light or stand still traffic. I also agree with you in that, police officers and firefighters should not be able to text and rive either because they are not above the law. Plus, they should be concerned with the task they have at hand, not texting someone about something else.

  3. Texting and driving really has been a hot topic over the last couple years. Personally, I know three people who were hit by someone who was texting and driving. The damages go beyond just having to pay a couple hundred bucks. This is why I agree that texting should be illegal while driving. The only place I could think of that it should be allowed is at a red light. You aren't putting anyone in danger and as long as you are vigilant, you won't slow up traffic.

  4. I’m right with you will. Those who keep the law should not then have the power to be above it. Emergency officials should have to follow the same laws as ordinary citizens. Texting while driving is an extremely dangerous action, as it almost completely diverts your attention off of the road and to the person who you are texting. Add this to the high speeds emergency officials travel at to get to an emergency situation increases the danger exponentially. So I agree that texting should be illegal while driving, for all people, emergency officials included. We are all equal under the law aren’t we?
